Where To Live In Manhattan...apartment Rentals...?
Apr 18, 2009 by dvzman314 | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
My woman and I (both in our late 20's) are moving to Manhattan for the first time. I'm trying to find a place to rent for about $1800-$2300 (preferably a dependable 1 bedroom). That being said, we're just not sure on where to live. We've heard Chelsea and East/West Village are complex, but we've also heard we should live in the Financial District or Midtown. Any recommendations on where to live? What brokers/companies to reach out to for steal? Thanks!
Craigslist will give you 10000000 listings by brokers. I'd go redress to the listings of OWNER "owned" apartments. Forget locators/brokers

Currently in California and inspiring to NYC in July. Looking for an apartment to rent in Manhattan. Will have only 2 weeks in July to look for it. Whats the kindest way to go about it without using a broker (expensive!)?
Do searches for "no fee" apartments
Go through the classifieds of the villagevoice.com and nytimes.com
Be particular about using "apartment share" services where a company will find you a roommate, many times you can be paired with unbroken psychos or convicted criminals. Many apartment sharing services do not do any sort of background impede whatsoever.
Appropriate Christmas Tip For Doormen In Manhattan Rental Building?

Appropriate Christmas tip for doormen in Manhattan rental building?
I was wondering how much is customary to tip the building staff at Christmas. I room in a full service, hi-rise building with the staff of 15 (doormen/concierge, porters, care guys). My rent is $1,500 (it's a corporate apt, my employer pays 50% of the rent). Site: West 40ies. The buidling: 45 floors/12 apts per floor
Although it's listed as a Non-essential hi-rise the building is very mixed: there are wealthy CEOs and recent college grads sharing limited 1 or 2brs.
It will be my first Chrismas here ( i moved in Feb'08). The staff is very friendly (except for 1 guy, each building has that 1 guy who is not a team player) I introduced myself when inspirational in and since then they all greet me by my name (of course except that 1 guy). I'm a very low maintenance tenant, they do accept my packages and dry cleaning every other week or so. Other than that I don't make much from them.
I was thinking $30-$40 each. Less to that 1 guy and more to the 3 doormen I like best. I assume if they collect small amounts from over 400 apartments they'll end up with a very suitable Chrismas bonus.
I know it's prime Manhattan so standards are high here. I don't want to be cheap but can't act like Oprah either. What do u guys about?
Any feedback is appreciated.
I don't cognizant of if you should play favorites. I would tip $35-40 to all 4 doormen.
