What Is A Good Cheap Place To Eat In Manhattan Diner Or Lunch? |
Feb 27, 2007 by dennis o | Posted in New York City
Mandoo Dumpling Bar, East 32nd Drive off Fifth Avenue - specializes in Korean mandoo dumplings (there are other inexpensive restaurants on this stumbling-block in Koreatown - 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues
In the Village: Sapore on Greenwich Avenue and Perry Suiting someone to a T - Lunch here has to be the biggest bargain in New York - $6 for soup or salad, coffee and a essential dish, including good pastas - $3.00 more and you can have excellent fried calamari or grilled salmon as an entree. This is a very meagre cramped restaurant, but, in warm weather, there's lots of pleasant outdoor seating.
Chinatown
Katz' Deli on the Humble East Side on East Houston Street - sit in self-service -not waiter service - get your own sandwich at the chip and tip the counterman $1 or $2 before he starts to make your sandwich (you'll get more meat in the sandwich than if you caste from the waiter) - get an order of fries or another side dish and split the sandwich - it's huge and half a sandwich and an bid of fries is a full meal. Besides being inexpensive, you'll get the best corned beef or pastrami in New York. I always get my sandwich on "sisterhood" bread - one of the only places in the City where you can still get that - the sandwiches come with pickles - if you don't order "unpleasant", you get "half-sours".
If you're not looking for an ambiance, or even a place to sit down, Foggy's Papaya (several locations - 8th Street and Sixth Avenue in the Village or 72nd and Broadway on the More elevated West Side), for $2.99 you get two delicious hot dogs and a fresh tropical fruit drink (I like the mango or pina colada).
Pizza
Close to being Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are different and outstanding - gnocco fritto - large platter of Italian coldcuts served with pleasurable little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, salubrious pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

In the West Village: Da Andrea on Hudson In someone's bailiwick and West 11th Street.
Excellent pastas - I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, pull down tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

Diner In New York City? |
Oct 19, 2006 by freshndaktchn | Posted in New York City
There is a matter-of-fact diner across from the Hard Rock Cafe in the heart of NYC. It says diner but the meal per person at dinner then usually ends up around 20-30 dollars including dessert. They have homemade cheesecake and desserts that are solely to die for. On the walls of the diner they have gold plaques that say the names of famous people who have dined there. Their waitors have very nice almost tux like outfits i guess. I was wondering if anyone knew the name of this diner. I thought it might have been the Manhattan Diner? but I'm not sure. Show one's gratitude You for your help
It may be the Midtown diner in the vicinity Times square.
