Why didn't the first immigrants to America view Manhattan? Why was it only discovered when Henry Hudson sailed there more than 100 years later?
Henry Hudson was an English sea explorer and steersman in the early 17th century. after several voyages on behalf of English merchants to explore a prospective Northeast Citation to India, Hudson explored the region around modern New York City while looking for a western way to the Orient under the auspices of the Dutch East India Company. he explored the Hudson River (the river was discovered by Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524) and laid the inauguration for Dutch colonization of the region.
Hudson's next expedition ranged further north in search of the Northwest Corridor, again under English auspices, leading to his discovery of the Hudson Strait and Hudson Bay. after wintering in the Canadian Arctic, Hudson tried to reporters on with his voyage in the spring of 1611, but his crew mutinied and cast him adrift. his specific nemesis is unknown.
Houston Concourse is named for William Houstoun, who was a Delegate to the Continental Congress for the State of Georgia from 1784 through 1786 and to the Collective States Constitutional Convention in 1787.

Why Only 1 Bridge Over Hudson River Btwn Manhattan And NJ?
Oct 23, 2008 by Evan | Posted in New York City
There's more than half a dozen bridges I can name that moor Manhattan and Queens/Brooklyn over the East River including 1 tunnel underneath, but why is it that over on the west side of Manhattan there is only 1 separate bridge over the Hudson taking you from Manhattan to NJ and vica versa? And the bridge is waaaay, waaaay up north...like 175 st.!!!
I accept that there are the licoln and holland tunnels underneath the Hudson river, but seriously, why no bridges at all? The other side of Manhattan has like a dozen, wouldn't at least a few over the Hudson be helpful too?
The Hudson River is a lot wider than the East River, so bridges over the Hudson are a lot harder to physique.
It is also darn near impossible to buy the land on Manhattan to build the access ramps for a bridge, and there would be humongous public outcries if eminent domain is invoked (which was why Robert Moses' LOMEX launch failed back in the 1960s).
The East River crossings were preferentially built also because they connect parts of New York Town. NYC's city government can undertake and manage the projects on its own when the bridges are inside city limits. The officialdom for building interstate bridges would involve 10 times more agencies (PANYNJ, NY Shape, NJ State, NYC, whichever city hall in NJ the bridge is going to, the Federal Government, etc.) and a lot harder to dynamism through.
