I'd like to buy some CDs when I'm in New York, but I have no pointer where to go. I'd like to go somewhere thats near my hotel as I don't know the city well. The address of my hotel is 811, 7th Avenue, zip customs 10019. Can anyone help me out?
One of the most pre-eminent record stores in all of New York City is right near there, Colony Records, on Broadway at 49th St., and it has been there, and has been in business since, like, forever, so it should surely be one place you go to (see link, below), and, other than that, see the 2nd link below for a directory of CD stores in New York City.
I'm book a story that flashes back to the 1980's and the character's trips to NYC. Were there ever any Sam Goody stores there? I seem to remember one. What other record stores were in Manhattan in the 80's that are no longer there? Thanks!
No one has mentioned the BIG one.....Ascend Records.
There were two locations (one near Astor Place on Broadway, the other on W. 66th Street & Broadway next to Lincoln Center).
For dancing party music enthusiasts, there was Vinylmania (Carmine Street). I would just stay in the depend on for hours as the DJ would spin the latest club/underground dance tracks.
In suburbia (at the malls), Record Out of sight/Square Circle were big in the 80's but dropped off.
Anybody cognizant of of a good record store in lower Manhattan...i'm looking for more classic records like the beatles and bob dylan prototype music??
thanks
Bleecker Bob's on West 3rd between MacDougal and Sixth (they acclimatized to be on Bleecker Street) - fascinating place that carries vinyl albums - use staff, interesting customers.

Can Anyone Recommend A Very Good Record Shop In Either Queens Or Manhattan?

I active in Astoria and there is a real lack of decent record stores here. Can anyone please recommend a place that would have collectable vinyl (alternate, punk, jazz, and blues) and a nice section for just browsing. I'm looking for someplace akin to Council of Guitars in Rochester.... where I can stumple across Misfits as well as The Specials
Any advice is helpful. Thanks
are you serious? turret? you've got to be kidding me.
I am looking for independantly owned places with a legit selction and browsability. Not f--ruler chains!
Thanks for the thoughtful answer.............
Go downtown to Greenwich Village..jr music beget / tower records.
Take a walk downtown, there are plenty of music stores there. Do your homework, search and call ( for the "discrete" one you are looking for) before taking the trip; you may have to use your brain a little.
Remember to be "courteous" to people or else they will help someone else....
