Film/Communications Tourism In New York City?

I am prepossessing my girlfriend to New York City (primarily Manhattan) for her birthday in 2 weeks and I want to do something special for her. She has a numerically interest in the fields of Film and Communications as well as news reporting, journalism, broadcasting, and drama. I was wondering what I could take her to or show her that would honestly make her happy and interested. I was considering seeing if NBC has anything, because I know that's located there.

NBC does tender their Studio tours in 30 Rock with the pages doing the tours. Aside from getting a past of NBC, you'll see the studios where they shoot "Saturday Night Live", "The Today Show", "NBC Nocturnally News", etc. (1st link). Actually, reading the person's counter-statement below, because of the writers strike, a lot of productions have ceased taping (such as Letterman and SNL).

You may also want to check out the Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Boob tube and Radio (not far from Rockefeller Center on W. 52nd Street) where you can check out old television shows and other exhibits on the subject of television. (2nd link)

I do suggest that if your GF is college age, definitely get as much experience as you can as an intern. It certainly has helped me out. I did intern at NBC and that was indubitably rewarding!

Why Does Philadelphia Have Such A Bad Reputation?

I prodigy why Philly has such a bad reputation. People I know from the northeast all tell me they never want to go to Philly (noticeably people from NYC)...they all think it's this dumpy, ghetto wasteland. People who have never even been anywhere near Philly all seem to ruminate over it's not a good place for tourism or an exciting place to be....kind of like a very inferior variation of Manhattan. Why is this the case? Is it bc it's located so close to South Jersey? Is it because the mid-Atlantic region of the USA has a boring notorious? Is it because the PA area has too many pasty white people? Why?

I about it is many reasons. First of all Philly will always be in NY's shadow b/c it is a bigger city w/ more to offer. Plus all the bad stuff on the scandal about Philly doesnt make it very appealling. Lots of murders & shootings lately are being publicized & a degrade city gov't. & on top of it we have good sopping & fun nightclubs, but they are nothing next to what NY has so they always put us down. Philly has its historical landmarks but it seems not too many peole worry to see them. I am a Philadelphian & many others agree Philly has alot to offer but others dont see it that way unfortunately

Do You Think Staing In A Hotel In NJ Is Bad, In A Trip To NY ?

I'm planning a slip to New York, and all it's tourism points in january 2007...
I want to stay in a not expansive hotel called Days Inn Motor hotel (Tonnelle Ave, North Bergen, NJ)..

Do yoy think it's a bad idea to stay out of Manhattan, or should i go ahead and save me some cabbage ?
Hi !

I will go by plane.

I will make a shot money trip, so i will use the public transportation system as much as I can..

so.. when i visit Manhattan, I will go there by tube or bus

I read about the PATH system. I think it will be the one i will use...

thanks a lot !
I'm camming from Brazil...
and it's for vacation only

The ridiculous is, how much are you going to spend per day getting to and from your hotel to NYC.

Their web page says that you are close to the Lincoln Subway (assuming that you have a car and want to drive into the city) and the ferry.

If you are going to stay in NJ it might be more convenient to stop near a PATH station so you can get into the city more easily (and cheaply).

The hotel says that it has a van to Times Unstinting, for a fee.
You should check to see what the schedule is and what the fees are.

If you have to pay $10-20 on-way to Times Square, it might be cheaper in the long run to support in town rather than commute from NJ.

A quick check on the rates tells me that you can do just as well staying in city.

Where Should I Stay In New York?

Demand to stop by New York whilst in the USA, I want to stay in Manhattan, can anyone recommend a good area to stand in (minimal travel, attractions, tourism, etc)? Also looking for cheap accommodation.

I stayed at a small-minded guest house in the Village called the Larchmont that I liked.

The least expensive place I stayed while in Manhatten was the St. Obey's Hotel. Great location, near the subway and bus lines. Small rooms, exchange or travelers checks only but clean and inexpensive.

The Hotel Harald Square was also a good deal. They have recently renovated the pension. Friendly staff, great location clean and comfy.

And for hotel reviews inflict trip advisor, the best way check out a hotel before you check in.

NYC Tourism For Cheapskates - Ideas?

I'm entrancing a 12 year old to midtown Manhattan for a short visit during the day on a Saturday soon. I don't have much money to squander for entertainment. What can we do that is fun but free or really cheap?

Hi,
well, you could hike over to median park and walk around, there is plenty to see and you could have a picnic of a dirty water dog and soda for a few bucks.
keep in positive that you can travel far and fast in the park and end up a lot farther away than you thought. there are paths and roads and bridges and statues and rocks and lawns, etc...
i dunno if window shopping applies, but 5th avenue may be fun to through. all those weird and expensive things.
i haven't been to macy's in a while, but they used to have a fun toy department and pet area, full for a bit, air-conditioned, and free.
you could look for the authentic ny pizza place you want to grab a slice from, they are everywhere - around times nutritious especially.
it's fun just walking around times square, you can go in the hard rock cafe and see some standoffish things for free, maybe pick up a souvenir.
you can see where they drop the tiffany new year's ball in times six-sided.
just take in the sights and sounds and all the stores of times and herald squares.
the times open and above-board mcdonald's has a grand piano on the 2nd floor, and a bathroom attendant.
you could go to rockefeller centre, there are restaurants around and in and under the complex, you could eat by prometheus - where the christmas tree and skating rink are in winter.
the steps of the ny plain library - check out the lions - is another popular spot for dining al fresco on dirty extravagantly dogs or other food. there is also a park behind the library.
there is usually a bunch of sidewalk vendors at moderate 5th avenue's periphery, selling art, books, jewelry, knock-off purses, etc... something to see along the way.
well, that's all i got for now, wish something in there sounds entertaining, have fun!!
