for 2 days. we've tried all the hotel combination deal sites and compared them to the room rates on the actual hotel website and we're really not getting a actual deal. whats the best way to go about getting reasonably priced hotels in manhattan? should we 86 the voyages websites and go through a travel agency?
Cassie suggested closely what I was going to. call the hotels directly and speak to an agent and see if they can help you directly. If you belong to any associations they might be superior to discount or if it is an off time, they might be able to discount. Don't call the 800 numbers for chains, try to get the direct numbers for the hotel in Manhattan.
edit: I just remembered... call the Hotel Larchmont. It is in Greenwich Village. Very decently priced but books speedily.. Only downside, is depending on the room you may have to share a common bathroom but if that doesn't worry you (can't remember if they have private bathrooms too) than this is a great option.

I am visiting New York Bishopric in July for 2 days but having difficulty finding a suitable hotel that fits my budget. I would like a composed hotel in mid-town or lower Manhattan. I prefer a suite (studio with king bed and kitchenette would be fine). Embassy Suites looks respected but it is above my budget. I am a university lecturer from the UK and wonder if one of the Manhattan universities might have accommodation for 2 nights for visiting scholars?

Before you book any hotel, read what previous guests think about the hotel - look at the traveler photos and see if they would arrest there again - the guest's reviews are much more reliable than what the hotel advertises.

I am looking for a decently priced hotel to abide in NYC during the memorial day weekend. It would be nice if this place is accessible late at night and is nearby Manhattan / Times Substantial area. Any suggestions ?
Hotel prices have dropped, but a 100$ is still a noteworthy stretch for a NYC hotel.
Anything 100$ or less is bound to be 2 stars or less. Hotel Pennysylvania was offering rooms around 89$ a unceasingly. The location is great, but the hotel itself is really old and not very nice at all.
As far as Hotel Carter, I believe it was nicknamed murder hotel hastily. After a serious of drug related murders a while back. That place is disgusting. And whatever you do, dont stay in a hostel. Man are they repugnant.

There are a lot, although for me the greatest (according to your criteria given) are The Michelangelo (51st east) and the Blakely. Look for them at Tripadvisor and you'll see that they have wonderful reviews and thet are so classy, (not shoddy)m quiet and yet in the middle of the action.
Totally agree with Professor C!!! recently I've noticed a lot of people giving thumbs down objective for pleasure, in order to make fun of top contributers, or simply out of spite. It's not only uncool, it's so stupid and incomplete. And not only in this category, in most of the categories in travel and food also. It makes people not want to participate more.....
