Question About Numbering Of Streets In Manhattan? (east/west)?

I'm not a exclusive New Yorker but I visit Manhattan often and I was wondering how you differentiate between East and West streets when someme says something like: Fifth and 42nd Drive. How do you know if that they're talking about East 42nd St. or West 42nd St?
And what's the dividing line btwn E and W?

Run 1: Avenues run north/south, while Streets run east/west.

Rule 2: East means east of 5th Avenue, while West means west of 5th Avenue. So, for specimen, there is only one 42nd Street, but it is divided into two sections - we portion east of 5th Avenue, and the portion west of 5th Avenue.

What that means is that there is only one intersection between a dedicated Avenue, and a given numbered street. To describe the intersection as, for example, 7th Avenue and West 42nd Street is undeniably providing redundant information because the only place where 42nd Street crosses 7th Avenue is where 42nd Street is also called West 42nd Boulevard.

EAST VS WEST MANHATTAN?

I am staying at a hostel in NYC for a week. One is on the West Manhattan Side on 94th roadway. The other is on the East Manhattan side on 73rd street. I hear the West side is nicer, although the hostel on the East side is closer to the Times Square area, which we aim to spend a lot of time at. Please let me know what you think. I've been trying to weight my options and am very undeceive on this.

NYC is all about walking and charming the subway. You may as well stay on the nice side of town, where you will hear significantly less nighttime noise and sirens blowing through at 3 am. NYC is really one of the nicer big cities nowadays, and safer, but sleeping through at least some of the night (or even day, depends on your plans) is a big "inescapable"!
Lived on Long Island first 29 years, visited NYC enough to know how to occurrence it and what it's about.
Have fun!

How To Get From The West Side To East Side In Manhattan Ny?

I always get at a loss when changing from the east side to west side. what is the easiest way for me to remember and how do i do it. is it always the opposite way from where I am at?

In my sentiment if you are a person who moves around a lot in NYC, you really need to learn the basic directions, north east west and south. Some people call to mind a consider it's so complicated but it is actually pretty simple. Learn which direction the traffic flows on the absolute avenues. This will help you quickly figure out which direction you need to walk. Basic head up on the streets, Even numbered streets go East bound, Odd numbered streets go West Bound, there are some exceptions, but that is the prohibit. Also look at the address on the streets, Even numbers are on the South side of the street, while odd numbers are on the north side. Also pick up on landmarks, doubtless tall buildings and learn where they are located.

If you learn those basic concepts you will have no problem getting around the burg for the most part. Of course once you get downtown into the village or where the grid system is abandoned you will just have to go by instinct or memory.

Can Anyone Compare East Side Manhattan To The West Side?

Can anyone be in a class East Side Manhattan to the West Side?

The East side is more right, old money--This is where most people think when they think of NY wealth (Park Avenue, 5th Avenue, etc).

The West side is more left of centre, (also wealthy) but more laid back. It's more common to see baby strollers and families.

What's The Difference Between Upper East Side And Upper West Side Manhattan?

also, which would you prefer to stay at if you could?

Both are merry-class neighborhoods filled with people who make quite a bit of money. Of the two, though, the upper east side is, ordinarily the more wealthy of the two. The upper east side is also filled with museums, art galleries, and very upper-class shopping. Apartment buildings have doormen and concierges. The more northerly west side, in contrast, has somewhat less to see and do, and the shopping is somewhat more moderate in price.

If I was wealthy enough to be able to actual in either, I'd go for the upper east side.
