How Can You Affordably Live In Manhattan? All Aspects.?
Oct 26, 2009 by Chloe | Posted in New York City
I'm mostly asking about comestibles, groceries, etc. All the grocery stores around midtown, and everywhere in Manhattan it seems, charge an arm and a leg to eat healthy (deli meat, fruits/veggies, etc.) Additional laundry/dry cleaning is a murderer. What can I do to make this easier? HELP!
If you penury to live in Manhattan, you have to pay the high prices. Theoretically you can go to other boroughs to get your chores done, but if you don't have a car it would be a big hassle. One of my coworkers lives in Manhattan but goes grocery shopping in Queens, but he's got a car.

Appropriate Christmas tip for doormen in Manhattan rental building?
I was wondering how much is customary to tip the building workforce at Christmas. I live in a full service, hi-rise building with the staff of 15 (doormen/concierge, porters, sustention guys). My rent is $1,500 (it's a corporate apt, my employer pays 50% of the rent). Tracking down: West 40ies. The buidling: 45 floors/12 apts per floor
Although it's listed as a Non-essential hi-rise the building is very mixed: there are wealthy CEOs and recent college grads sharing poor 1 or 2brs.
It will be my first Chrismas here ( i moved in Feb'08). The staff is very friendly (except for 1 guy, each building has that 1 guy who is not a team player) I introduced myself when stirring in and since then they all greet me by my name (of course except that 1 guy). I'm a very low maintenance tenant, they do accept my packages and dry cleaning every other week or so. Other than that I don't require much from them.
I was conclusion $30-$40 each. Less to that 1 guy and more to the 3 doormen I like best. I assume if they collect small amounts from over 400 apartments they'll end up with a very satisfactory Chrismas bonus.
I know it's prime Manhattan so standards are high here. I don't want to be cheap but can't act like Oprah either. What do u guys fantasize?
Any feedback is appreciated.
I don't identify if you should play favorites. I would tip $35-40 to all 4 doormen.

I employed to be a doorman and a porter before on the upper east side, average tenant gave most of us about $20/40 each. now some of us received more because there was years of upon and friendliness and the extra work we would do because of them.

Now if you do this, remember you're going to get the evil eye from that prick every time he sees you *lol*

I over your tip of 30 or 40 bucks each is fine.. My sister lived in a high rise in Chicago and at Christmas opportunity her little old doorman Ephram made more in tips than alot of people make all year! If you give each of the godlike ones the same amount you can give the extra attentive ones a bit more by buying them a bottle or a gift card for a tidy restaurant.
