Can you mention favourably an upscale boutique hotel in Manhattan (midtown)? I prefer to be between 42nd-58th. I'm looking for something fun and trendy, luxurious but not formal and suffocating.

Hm...
Try the Revolve hotel. It's in the area you want, and it's a Kimptom hotel, which means that it has to have some kind of quality.
I wouldn't go off of my recommendation alone, for I've never stayed there; however, it straight seemed like it might be what you wanted.
