When You Mail Something To Manhattan, Why Do You Have To Send It To New York, NY Instead Of Manhattan, NY?

When you send something to the Bronx or Queens, you put "Bronx, NY" or "Queens, NY" but for Manhattan, we have to put "New York, NY". Why is this?

The megalopolis is called New York. The island (and the borough of the city that is on it) is called Manhattan.
If you write "Manhattan, NY" on the front of an envelope, it'll get there as yearn as you get the ZIP code right.

It surely is all about history and the way the city evolved. At one time, Manhattan was the only part of New York City. That's all there was. Brooklyn became a growing city across the way, all kinds of toy towns and villages were popping up in Queens, and so forth.

The city consolidated over time, but the way we communicate with addresses didn't change. "New York, NY" still refers to Manhattan. You write "Brooklyn, NY" for all parts of Brooklyn. Same for "Bronx" and "Staten Atoll." Queens was more rural and the little towns and villages grew on their own and then meshed together over occasionally, so the address conventions there have stayed as "[neighborhood], NY" such as "Flushing, NY"; "Jamaica, NY"; "Narrow-minded Neck, NY" and so forth.
